Echoes from the Planetary Cores

Understanding the Earth's core, its connection with the upper layers, its role in Earth's thermal history including how it sustains geomagnetic field — and how other worlds may do the same.

A five‑year Laureate Fellowship advancing how seismic waves illuminate the hidden interiors of Earth, the Moon, Mars, and icy moons.

Professor Hrvoje Tkalčić

Professor of Seismology at ANU, with a research focus on Earth’s deep interior, including the inner and outer core, lowermost mantle, and core–mantle interactions. His research combines seismic and correlation wavefields to investigate Earth’s structure and dynamics, including source processes, volcanic events and microseisms. He develops new approaches to Earth imaging using multi‑dataset integration and innovative inversion techniques. He has led seismic deployments in remote regions, including the oceans. His work extends to planetary seismology, supporting the proliferation of geophysical instruments on other planets and moons. His books include The Earth’s Inner Core and When Worlds Quake.

Professor Hrvoje Tkalčić

ARC Australian Laureate Fellow · Seismology, ANU

Professor Tkalčić aims to revolutionise our understanding of planetary cores, which are vital to Earth’s magnetic field and thermal dynamics. This project will use advanced seismic imaging and new data to explore the Earth’s core and its interactions with upper layers, offering insights essential for sustaining life. As interplanetary missions expand, the research will also extend to the Moon, Mars, and icy moons, enhancing planetary science and Australia’s leadership in space exploration. The Fellowship will develop innovative techniques and models, foster international collaborations, and train a new generation of STEM experts. Outcomes will support space agencies, scientific institutions, and industry, reinforcing Australia’s role in Earth and planetary sciences.
